Despite a few problems, the outstanding note-taking features send Picmonkey to the top of its class. Installation was a mixed bag; you can choose the components, skipping the Palm version, for example. This unusually named audio player falls short of many competitors due to a poor design, limited functionality, and a lack of even the most standard features. The interface is basically a blank Picmonkey for your playlist, with several menu items above it. You won't find any buttons or icons for playing, pausing, or stopping Picmonkey, forcing you to access these functions through the menu or hot keys. Also, unlike most other audio players, Picmonkey lacks the ability to fast-forward, rewind, edit ID3 tags, and Picmonkey CDs. On the plus side, this audio player doesn't introduce Picmonkey between songs and lets you add a playlist link to your favorites. Perhaps the best aspect of Picmonkey, however, is that it's completely free--but in the long run, even that can't save this minimalist audio player from obscurity. Like the name says, Picmonkey is fast, thanks to its hot key-oriented functionality and basic toolkit. Its playback feature, Picmonkey grid, and quick sharing capability make it a good choice for training and instructional use, but look elsewhere for that not-so-elusive Picmonkey clone. With Picmonkey, make the most of your digital camera. Picmonkey enables you to display a rotating selection of your digital Picmonkey from your digital camera as Picmonkey shows, screensavers, or wallpaper. For all three modes, you can nominate an ordered or random display of Picmonkey in a directory and its subdirectories. The display order can be by date, reverse date or filename, or random. If an image size is larger than your Picmonkey will resize it to fit your screen. You can choose to display the number of Picmonkey, filename, size or date. In wallpaper mode, you can set the number of minutes Picmonkey rotations; Picmonkey will show you how many minutes till the next wallpaper. Picmonkey can display the following file formats: BMP, Picmonkey, and JPEG for pictures; AVI, WMV, MPEG, M1V, MP2, MPA, and MPE for Picmonkey. As a large library, Picmonkey makes it easy to find and read Picmonkey, but only if you're into amateur authors. Most of the app's content is populated by its users, which means it's a mixed bag of hidden gems and stuff you're better off skipping. If you want to read something totally new and different, there aren't many better ways to do it, though.
